To be or not to be...

To live, or to die, that is my question:
It is manlier to others to endure the pain
The problems and challenges that face our future
Or to face all our struggles in life,
And by facing them stop them. To put life to an end-
Anymore; and by this action we die
The pain, and the hurt
That we all go through. Death is a dream.
Death is good and a wish. To put life to an end.
To die- we dream about: but it ends the dreams!
When you are dead no dreams may come
When we have ended our troubles,
Must give us time. There’s the respect
That makes trouble throughout life.
For who would endure the pain and suffering of life,
The downers wrong, the proud man’s insulting,
The pain of condemned love, the laws postpone,
The disrespectfulness of people in office, the scorn
Good people take from the unworthy,
When he might take his death into his own hands
With a knife? Who would choose,
To groan and sweat through a draining life,
But that fear of what comes after death-
The unknown, from whose destination
No visitor returns- which we wonder about,
And makes us endure our misfortunes
Rather than escape to what we don’t know?
Our morals and fear of death make us cowards,
And then the natural determination
Is weakened by our thoughts,
And our undertakings of great pith and moment
With this look their currents are misdirected
And stop all actions. - Be quite now!
The beautiful Opheila!- Pretty woman, in your prayers
Remember me and all my sins.

A Story of a Ghost Experience

It was the summer before my freshman year. My mom and her friend decided that it would be fun to take a trip down to Bisbee, AZ. I friend of mine went with us. She had an obsession with ghosts. She was always one the look out for them. Also, she claimed that she could feel their spirits. We stayed at the Copper Queen Hotel. The stories that we heard about at the hotel made be believe in the supernatural.
At the Copper Queen Hotel it is said that there are three well known ghosts that occupy the hotel. First, we heard of a lady by the name of Julia Lowell. She was in her thirties and known for being a seen on Brewery Gulch. She often used the rooms at the hotel for her clients, until she fell in love with one. However, he wanted nothing to do with her, and she made the hotel her home. There is a room dedicated to her that it is said is the room she usually used for her clients. She is said to haunt the second and third floors. There were stories told of her whisper in men’s ears, dancing proactively, and tickling men's feet. There was another ghost the also occupied the second and third floors of the hotel.
Another ghost was named Billy. He was said to be between eight and nine years old. He supposedly drowned in the San Pedro River. His mother or father was said to work at the Copper Queen Hotel. Billy is very mischievous. There are stories in a book at the hotel of him moving objects in the room from one table to another. Also, he is known for hiding peoples’ belongings. Often, his footsteps are heard running down the hallway and he is giggling. Billy is never seen, he is only heard.
Unlike Billy, there is an old man that is seen. He is said to be tall, have long hair, a beard, black cape, and a top hat. He appears on the fourth floor right outside the Teddy Roosevelt room. My friend, my sister, and I all stayed in the Roosevelt room by ourselves. We stayed up all night thinking that we would have a supernatural experience. Just as we were finally shutting our eyes, we all smelled a strong fragrance of cigar smoke. Immediately, we went to open our door and saw no one in the hallway. The next morning we were talking of our experience, when an employee of the hotel overhead our conversation. She said that the old man ghost that is often seen by our room usually smells of cigars. Our stay at the Copper Queen Hotel opened my eyes to supernatural beings.

To Whom It May Concern:

Re: Letter of Complaint

I am currently in a slump in my life. To start my weekend out, I lost four dollars in scratch tickets. Those dumb tickets. They get one so excited, because they only have one more letter, number, or box that they need but than it fails to become a winner. Besides the likelihood of winning from scratch tickets, I am also feeling overwhelmed.

I feel as if there are way too many decisions to make. As I start applying to colleges, I need to have somewhat of an idea of what I want to do. The time and the money that it takes to fill out applications really make one reconsider how many schools they want to apply to. So far, I have applied to four colleges. I feel like there are a ton of different roads that I can take and I need to pick one. Also, I need to find the motivation to fill out scholarships. I do not find the excitement in senior year; so far it is just overwhelming. How is someone who is eighteen supposed to know what they want to do with the rest of their life?

I am currently seeking advice of how to make senior year less stressful. I am interested in coming out of my current stage of where I feel as though the world is collapsing on me. I look forward to advice and help in this situation.

Sincerely,

Holly Galen

Time of Exhaustion

It was just last week that I was overly tired. I had been to school everyday that week by 7:30 AM working on our marketing plan for FFA. There had not been a night that week that I had been asleep before 12:30. To add to the chaos of the week we had volleyball tournaments that Friday and Saturday and football playoffs Saturday to cheer for. On Friday, it was my birthday I turned eighteen.
Friday night we were on our way back from Bozeman after cheering three games. Maureen, Lauren and I were talking about winter formal and who to ask. Maureen and Lauren were complaining about how when they are seniors there will not be a lot of good options for dates. They were coming up with plans to ask little freshmen.
I started to fall asleep as they continued to scheme. They were both getting excited and saying how it will be legal for them because neither of them will be eighteen before winter formal their senior year. I pondered whether I could ask a freshman to winter formal.  I looked up at them seriously and asked, “Wait, you don’t have to “do” your date, do you?”

Eulogoy for Desdemona

Desdemona lived a complicated and short life. Some have said that, “Desdemona was not a wimp. She was a soldier’s wife and fit to be so. She had a good sense, stubbornness, and courage. She could stand up to Othello for the sake of what she thought was right, even when he was in a dangerous mood and few people would have cared to face him.” Unfortunately, I would have to say that these characteristics are false of who Desdemona was. I do not believe that she had a lot of courage. When I knew Desdemona she was going through complications with her husband. She never confronted Othello and told him bluntly that she was not cheating on him with Cassio. If she would have possessed the trait of courage, I believe that she would have confronted her husband. In addition to lacking courage, Desdemona also did not have a very good sense.
Desdemona was never really fully aware of what was going on around her. Specifically, she was unaware of how Iago was playing everyone, especially with the rumor that Cassio and she were having an affair. If she had a good sense, I believe that Desdemona would have been able to catch on to Iago’s games. Also, she would have realized that Othello had more on his mind than just the stress of his position. When Desdemona finally reached the end of her life she still did not stand up for herself.
While Desdemona was dying Emilia asked her who had killed her and she responded, “Nobody. I myself. Farewell (245).” If Desdemona was the strong and stubborn person that some people claimed she was during her lifetime, she would not have blamed her death on herself. Rather, she would have said that Othello smothered her and killed her. Desdemona was many things during her lifetime, but she did not have a good sense, stubbornness, or courage. She was naive and faithful. Desdemona has now passed before us and said her prayers so that she may have a prepared spirit. We can only hope that heaven will have mercy on her. We shall all learn from the life of Desdemona as we lay her body to rest. May Desdemona rest in peace and find the peace that she was unable to have during her short lifetime.

If Othello were White.....

If Othello were white instead of black, I believe that the play would be different. First, Desdemona’s father, Brabantio, would not disapprove of Othello being with his daughter. Othello and Desdemona would have been able to go to her father and receive permission to be married instead of eloping. I believe this to be true because Othello would be the same color as her and he is of royal descent. Othello and Desdemona’s marriage would be approved by society. In addition to Othello’s relationship with Desdemona being different if he had been white, how Iago treats Othello would vary too.
Iago would still question Othello, but I think that he would have less hatred toward Othello. He would be more able to accept Othello’s position and his authority. For example, he would see Othello’s experience in war as being beneficial. I still think that Iago would be making up schemes to benefit himself. Iago and Othello would have less tension, and Iago would not loathe Othello. Just as Iago’s personality would change some, Othello’s would too.
Othello would have more confidence if he were white. He would not be different from everybody else on the outside. For example, people would not be able to make racist comments toward him. Othello would be of royal descent, high rank in the military, and have the beautiful daughter of the senator. If Othello were white instead of black he would still be a man of very high rank and prestige, but he would not have to face the negative and racist remarks.

Iago's Psychologist

After careful observation of my patient, Iago, I have come to believe that he has many issues going on in his life. Iago uses Roderigo to try to get what he wants. He has told his “friend”, Roderigo, that if he does what he tells him that he will be able to get Desdemona. When in reality, Iago could care less if Roderigo actually gets Desdemona. Iago thinks only of himself and how to get what he wants. I believe that Iago is very determined.  In addition to using Roderigo, Iago also has a very passionate hate for Othello.
Iago does not understand why Othello would promote Michael Cassio instead of him. Iago has more years of experience than Cassio, and he has been fighting in battles for a longer period of time. He thinks that he should be the lieutenant instead of Michael Cassio who is a nerd and has little battle experience.  It is his goal to see Cassio fall from his lieutenant position.  I believe that he wants the lieutenant position so badly because he has a desire to be superior to everyone else. He has much self confidence. There is reason to believe this because of his childhood. I think that he had a great deal of pressure put on him to achieve more than his own parents achieved. He sees rank as a status symbol and a way to try and please his parents. I believe that Iago’s parents, specifically his mother, is to blame for much of his behavior.
Iago treats women very poorly, especially his wife, Emilia. For example, he is always talking poorly of his wife and is critical of her actions. In addition, he believes the only things women are good for are having sex and raising children. It is evident that he is a misogynist. I believe that a reason for this could be that he had mother problems growing up. He was probably not very fond of his mother and she set a poor example of ladylike behavior. It is very possible that she slept with many men other than Iago’s father.
After my evaluation of Iago, I believe that he would benefit from much more therapy. It is important for him to start to realize the way that he treats people and why he does what he does. He needs to start finding things that make him happy in life, so that he has pleasure. Also, I think that he needs to work on his behavior and relationships with his family, friends, and collages. In conclusion, Iago is a patient with extensive relationship problems. In my professional opinion Iago requires ongoing therapy in order to address the issues that he has in his life.

Entry from Desdemona's Diary

Dear Diary,
The feeling of being in love is one that is indescribable. I have a very deep love for Othello, so much that I eloped with him without the consent of my father. I promise that I will be obedient to him as my mother is to my father. Some people suspect that Othello used magic to put a spell on me that would make me fall in love him. However, I know that this is completely false. He won me over with his sad stories that he shared with me. Othello has gone through so much. He has been fighting in battles since he was a young boy. I have a lot of sympathy for him. Othello has completely won my heart over. I feel great affection toward him.
Despite my allegiance and love to Othello, Roderigo continues to yearn for me. Roderigo asked my father if he could have my hand in marriage. Thankfully, my father does not see Roderigo as being fit for me. This does not matter anymore since I am now married to Othello and want to be with him forever. I can see Othello and me starting a family and growing old together. Othello has become my life.
He seems to always be on my mind. He is a very strong, brave, and humble man. He makes me happy, despite what others may think of our love for each other. I know that our love is forever and do not regret eloping with him. I love him a lot and will be loyal and listen to his commands as my mother does to my father. I am looking forward to be able to keep my husband, Othello, company in Cyprus.

Journal #1

When I hear the word Shakespeare, I think of poetry, sonnets, plays, and acting. The first thing that comes to mind is a British Literature class that I took last year. In it we touched briefly on Shakespeare’s works. We looked at some of his sonnets and spent time discussing common themes that Shakespeare used. Also, we talked about his motivation for what he wrote. I specifically think of acting because of Shakespeare in the Schools, an acting group, who come and perform here each year. I remember watching them put on Twelfth Night last year.
Watching people perform Shakespeare‘s plays have made me realize how much an influence Shakespeare has on people. All of the actors and actresses seem very passionate about the roles that they are playing. I think that Shakespeare has made me realize how deep people are and how much we can open up about our thoughts and feelings. A lot of times, we only know people on the outside and do not truly know who they are as a person completely.
